Breathing Symptoms from Allergies: What to Take Seriously

The allergens that cause sneezing and watery eyes can also trigger breathing issues. When you feel awful, it can be hard to know if you’re having normal allergies or a more serious problem. Luckily, there are clear answers.

Allergies and breathing problems often go hand-in-hand. When your nose is constantly stuffy or running, your nasal passages might be so irritated that it’s hard to breathe freely. So, you might expect some breathing issues when you’re dealing with an allergy attack.

But, how can you tell when your breathing issues are serious? How do you know when you need help? Our dedicated team at EMC Express Care in North Richland Hills, Texas, decided that April (a peak allergy month here in Texas) is the right time to tackle those questions and give you some easy-to-understand answers.

What breathing problems could indicate

Breathing problems could indicate asthma in fact, the two often occur together. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (ACAAI), about three-quarters of people with asthma in the 20-40 age group experience allergies.

Some people have asthma and don’t know it because they assume their breathing issues are just their allergies acting up again.

Asthma is serious and requires treatment, as do the other possible causes of breathing problems like pneumonia, emphysema, and bronchitis. At EMC Express Care, we can evaluate you for these conditions and help you find answers to your breathing problems.

But, before we can help, first you need to know how to recognize there’s a possible problem.

When to take breathing symptoms from allergies seriously

There are a few tell-tale signs that it’s time to reach out to us about your breathing problems. These include:

  • Wheezing, a whistling or rattling noise when you breathe
  • Difficulty inhaling enough air
  • Chest pain along with breathing issues
  • Frequent rapid breathing
  • Breathing problems alongside a deep cough
  • Breathing problems due to uncontrollable coughing spells
  • Feeling faint when you’re short of breath
  • Feeling nauseous when you’re short of breath
  • Breathing issues alongside your skin turning white or bluish

A general rule of thumb to follow is that if you have new breathing issues of any kind and they happen alongside your allergies, it’s best to get it checked out.
